Updates from the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut Highlands

NJ Highlands Act

The Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act was signed into law in August 2004 to preserve open space and protect the state’s greatest diversity of natural resources, including the drinking water supply for more than half of New Jersey residents. The Highlands Act documents the geographical boundary of the Highlands Region and establishes a Preservation Area and a Planning Area. It required that regulations be established in the Highlands Preservation Area, and that a Highlands Council be created to develop a Highlands regional master plan.
